A Broken Masterpiece
This handcrafted one of a kind coffee table stands by itself as a masterpiece of modern functional art.
The legs and the top frame are made from solid Birdseye Maple with inlays and borders of black ebony. The top is covered with quarter inch thick slices of Maple Burl glued to 17mm Baltic Birch plywood. The sun is made from Yellow Cedar Burl with rays of yellow cedar.
All wood burls have some small holes in it. Instead of using wood filler, I opted to fill them with clear casting resin, creating a 3D appearance.
Of course the table features two hidden compartments, one under the bottom shelf, the other under the tip which must be opened with a special key.
From the conception of the design, down to the smallest detail, a lot of thought and attention has been given in the making of this piece, whish is evidenced in the lovely shape of the crack itself.
As a finish, I like to use a special Polyurethane clearcoat, which is superior to lacquer, close to an automotive finish in hardness and durability. Several coats have been applied,, then hand polished to a brilliant high gloss.
The dimensions of the table are 48 inches in length by 23 inches in width and 18 inches high.
It has taken over 300 working hours to complete this masterpiece, but it shows.
